What is ADHD?
ADHD has had a few different names. The current name reflects that one can experience a deficit in attention, hyperactivity, or both. You or your child may experience things like having a very hard time paying attention, having to reread a passage several times to actually absorb it, difficulty with staying on task or following instructions, difficulty sitting still, feeling distracted constantly, avoidance of tasks that require focus, trouble planning or finishing tasks, and interrupting others often. As and adult, this can impact work and as a chil,d this can make learning at school extremely difficult.
Is there a test for it?
Usually, it can be diagnosed inthe office by a professional but psychological testing can also be done. This is an extensive testing that takes several hours usually and doesn't just test for ADHD but also learning disabilities and the various functional areas of the brain.
For general diagnosis, a PMHNP or psychiatrist can diagnose this office. Psychological testing needs to be done by a psychologist but they do not prescribe medications for treatment. The testing can be used by a prescriber to aid diagnosis, however.

What are my options for treating ADHD?
Medication is the gold standard for treating ADHD. Some specialized therapist can also help with coping skills that can aid in studying or training to overcome the symptoms.
Medication options include stimulants such as Adderall and Ritalin, and non-stimulants such as guanfacine, guanfacine, clonidine, strattera, and qelbree.
